Go back to nature trips in Spain?
The Tablas de Daimiel N.P., one of fourteen Spain’s gems, can surprise the keen birdwatcher with superb views of endangered birds such as White-Headed Duck, Marbled Teal, Moustached Warbler, Bearded Tit or the subspecies of the Reed Bunting. Moreover, the Calatrava area brings exciting chances for seeing the top five of the European steppe birds in just one day, namely Great & Little Bustard, Pin-Tailed & Black Belied Sandgrouse, or the cryptic Stone Curlew. The Calatrava Steppes are specially attractive in winter time, when the hypnotized eye of the visitor can enjoy with big flocks of several hundreds of Bustards and Sandgrouses together. Big Eagles, like Imperial, Golden & Bonelli’s, and Vultures as Griffon & Black complete the backdrop of the Ciudad Real province.
Vicente Malagón, our guide in the area, has designed 2 Day Tours to choose from. First one will lead the visitor to the Tablas de Daimiel National Park, one of the best wetlands of Spain, with good options for a plethora of endangered birds in a pretty and very little visited area. The second one combines a view of the best Steppe areas of La Mancha with a quick glance of an unspoiled Mediterranean habitat in the Calatrava Fields, a place located just at the north side of worldwide famous Sierra de Andujar.

The Calatrava Steppes, very close to our quarters in Almagro, hosts the best populations of Bustards & Sandgrouses in the south of Spain. A large area with fields for barley, oats and legominous plants where the very scarce Great & Little Bustard, Pin-Tailed & Black-bellied Sandgrouse thrive besieged by cities, roads & motorways in what it is one of their last refuges in La Mancha. In this tour we’ll through a beautiful habitat punctuated by old volcanoes and small rivers that can be dry in the summer season, with healthy populations of Rabbits & Mice that can attract predator such as Golden & Imperial Eagle.
The second part of this tour will be done in the nearby Mediterranean habitat of Calatrava, a place that is in fact the north side of Sierra de Andujar and where the main Iberian raptors can be seen gliding or even hunting in this open woodland. Hawfinch, Rock Bunting, Azure-Winged Magpie, Golden Oriole, Spanish Sparrow, Black Stork, Bee-Eater or King-Fisher are other inhabitants of this beautiful area of Spain.
