The Company for Quality Birding Holidays
Spanish Nature are different from other Companies offering birding Holidays on the following important points:
High quality and comfort of accommodation, food, transport and all other aspects of the tour are as important to us as the birding itself.
We provide alternative programs. Spanish Nature understands that when a couple travel together, sometimes one has less interest in the actual birding and prefers to enjoy other aspects of the visited holiday destination.
Travelling together as friends, this is our philosophy, because we want to enjoy the tour as much as you and we also want to be an integral part of the group.
Our birding guides are of an extremely high standard, maybe this is not necessary to say, but of course we want to assure you, that you will really see all possible birds.
Peter Jones gives a take on his local patch in the Serranía de Ronda and other areas visited during spring 2012. It has been a mixed bag of surprises and disappointments with unseasonable weather affecting the fauna and flora during the tours. Although it has to be said it was an enjoyable experience for all concerned, it remained a strange mixture of good and bad news for wildlife this year. A very dry winter meant late flowering plants leading to a lack of insects, which led to food shortages for early arriving birds reliant on a good food sources after their long passage from Africa, an unusual year so far….
Our guide Peter Jones gives an account of his remarkable encounter with an extremely rare albino Stonechat Saxicola rubicola, an unexpected occurrence on one of his famous day tours in the areas of the Serranía de Ronda and Sierra de Grazalema, Andalucia, Spain. Of course Spanish Nature day tours are renowned for providing wonderfully exciting days throughout Andalucia, here in the Serranía de Ronda it is particularly true with frequent sightings of Rüppell’s Vulture and Long-legged Buzzard, both very rare in our part of the world, but nothing quite prepared Peter for the sighting of what he originally thought was tissue paper snagged on a briar of bramble!
I am the first to admit that I have a very privileged life, I mean; I get to travel the world as a wildlife guide and tour leader, doing the things I most love. The pay is not great, but then not having bad days at the office must count for something! During my time as a guide, I have met and befriended many throughout the world, another bonus of the job, where I maintain contact and work alongside many of them. It might come as a disappointment for these friends to learn, that despite all the fantastic scenery and wonderful variety of wildlife I enjoy in their company, nothing compares for me to the most beautiful area of the Serranía de Ronda, my backyard.
Andalusia is one of the best areas in Europe to plan a holiday to suit all the family and particularly for those with an interest in nature. In fact, whether you like stunning scenery, walking or simply want to relax, then this province is a must visit area. In the current economic climate it is also a great value for money destination and with several major airports it offers choice of entry from all over the world. Of course with great birding sites such as Doñana National Park, La Serranía de Ronda and the Strait of Gibraltar, birdwatchers will never leave disappointed with the variety and quality of birds in Andalusia. For those who want to combine a holiday with seeing birds, wildflowers, culture and stunning scenery then no finer destination is available in Europe!
We guess ‘joy’ is a personal expression, but then anyone who knows Peter will appreciate his turn of phrase! Peter Jones takes us on a journey through his beloved and adopted home Andalucia, his enthusiasm for this wonderful area is obvious and his knowledge of the various provinces within the region is remarkable. Many friends of Spanish Nature have been fortunate enough to have been guided by Peter, not just in his own back yard, but in many other countries throughout the world, so we hope his article will appeal to those who know him and enlighten others to the delights that are to be found in Andalucia…..
